Review: Stitch Head, a funny and heartwarming family film

There’s a wonderfully spooky sparkle lighting up family screens this week, as Stitch Head arrives in VUE Cinemas — and it’s an absolute treat for monsters young and old.

Funny, fast-paced, and packed with charm, Stitch Head gets its humour pitch-perfect for children, delivering big laughs without ever feeling frantic or overwhelming. The jokes land beautifully for its younger audience, while adults are rewarded with some genuinely sharp lines and clever moments woven seamlessly into the script.

But beneath the giggles and glorious chaos beats a surprisingly tender heart. This is a film filled with warmth, carrying sweet, thoughtful messages about belonging, friendship, and self-worth — themes that resonate gently without ever becoming heavy-handed.

High above the little town of Grubbers Nubbin looms Castle Grotteskew, where the maddest of all mad professors works tirelessly in his delightfully chaotic laboratory. His latest monstrous creation is brought to (almost)-life™, before he promptly dashes off in pursuit of the next big breakthrough.

Hidden in the rafters, watching quietly from the shadows, is Stitch Head — the professor’s first and long-forgotten creation. Small, stitched together from odds and ends, and undeniably unusual, Stitch Head is a strange little hero you can’t help but adore.

Tasked with keeping the castle and its colourful collection of monsters hidden from the fearful townsfolk below, Stitch Head approaches his duty with anxious dedication. He knows that even the tiniest hint of monstrousness could send Grubbers Nubbin into a torch-wielding frenzy.

Naturally, things take a turn when Fulbert Freakfinder’s weary travelling freak show rolls into town. Desperate for a new attraction, Freakfinder instantly recognises star potential when he meets the humble Stitch Head — setting the stage for a wildly entertaining adventure.

Based on Guy Bass’s beloved book series, this raucous reimagining of the Frankenstein legend bursts with imagination. The animation is simply delicious — rich, expressive, and brimming with personality. Every frame feels lovingly crafted, striking a perfect balance between playful eeriness and visual warmth.

The characters themselves are brilliantly performed by a stellar voice cast, who inject wit, emotion, and infectious energy into every scene. It’s a joy to watch these wonderfully oddball creations spring to life.

In short, Stitch Head is a funny, heartfelt, and visually enchanting family film that delivers laughs, thrills, and genuine sweetness in equal measure.
